With all the hooplah here in Houston about our favorite second baseman, I wanted to give it a few days before I posted an entry about THE HIT. But that's it, I can't wait any longer. For those of us who've been Biggio fans for years, this is a sweet, sweet moment for Houston.
Craig Biggio is the newest member of the 3,000 hits club. He achieved this vaunted accomplishment on Thursday, 28 June, 2007, before a sold-out crowd at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
Of the approximately 16,000 men to play the game of baseball professionally since records were first kept, Biggio is only the 27th to reach the 3,000-hit plateau, and only the ninth to record all 3,000 of those hits with one team.
Biggio has been a lead-off second baseman for most of his career, which spans 20 years - all in an Astros uniform. He has more RBIs than all but seven Hall of Fame second basemen, and his career stolen bases trails only four.
No second baseman has scored more runs than Biggio, who has more hits, home runs, runs scored and RBIs than Hall of Fame second basemen Ryne Sandberg, Jackie Robinson, Red Schoendienst and Joe Morgan.
Biggio - get this - Biggio is the ONLY player Major League history to reach 600 doubles, 250 home runs, 2,700 hits and 400 stolen bases. He's also the only player in Major League history to make the All-Star team as a catcher and a second baseman.
